ChemGuevara - Radical program for drawing molecules and reactions - !!Under Construction!!

ChemGuevara is a simple yet complete program for drawing molecules and reactions. I created it because I lacked good alternatives for Unix, much less anything portable. Some other programs exist for Linux but they either crashed all the time, had graphical glitches or didn't even support proper selection. Programs for Windows tend to be closed source and expensive. ChemGuevara is open source, free for any use and portable.

Run/Download

You need Java 1.5.

Run via webstart. I don't guarantee the availability of my server, but it should be decent.

Download, requires that java3d is installed. You can browse the directory. For code, mail and ask.

License

The program is under the new BSD license which essentially says do what you want with the code and I take no responsibility for use.

There is no publication yet which you can cite. In the meanwhile, use:

Usage

Formatting text

OpenOffice/LaTeX-style formatting applies. H_2O means H2O. Likewise, K^+ means K+. If you wish to lower or raise a longer sequence then {} comes in handy: Ca^{2+} instead of Ca^2^+.

General

Zoom with scroll wheel. Pan by dragging with right mouse button.

Setting a different atom in bond mode: Hold over with the mouse in bond drawing mode and press 'a'.

Drawing double and tripple bonds: Draw a bond twice between two atoms.

Removing bond: Hold shift while drawing a bond.

Moving in select mode: Select, then hold space and move mouse.

Rotating in bond mode: Select, then place mouse on point around everything will rotate, hold r, move mouse.

Support for other file formats and new features

I can add new formats on request. I do not know which are important to support which is why I haven't spent any effort on this. If you have suggestions for improvements or new features, send a mail.
